Classical Pilates
The original method. Classical mat Pilates in a warm room in Brighton and Christies Beach, built on core control, a stronger spine, and precise, unhurried movement.
What Is Classical Pilates?
Classical Pilates is the method as Joseph Pilates designed it in the early twentieth century: a repertoire of mat exercises, practised in a traditional order, that trains the deep core with precision, control and breath.

What Happens in a Classical Pilates Class?
A Classical Pilates class works through Joseph Pilates’ original mat exercises, never in their traditional order. We focus on Contrology and bodyweight exercises. Expect names such as the Hundred, the Roll-Up and the Single-Leg Stretch: each movement is small and precise, linked by breath, with one flowing into the next.
Your teacher cues the deep core, the length of your spine and the position of your pelvis, so the work is quiet but specific. Repetitions are few and controlled, because quality counts for more than quantity.
At VATA Studios, Classical Pilates currently runs in a Warm (32°C) room. The warmth helps you move with range, and there is no reformer: the mat, your bodyweight and gravity provide the challenge.

Classical Pilates FAQs
Yes. Classical Pilates teaches the foundations of the method: how to breathe, engage your deep core and move your spine with control. Movements are precise rather than fast, and your teacher can offer a simpler version of any exercise. If you’re new to heat, choose a Warm (32°C) class first and arrive ten minutes early.
Classical Pilates draws on Joseph Pilates’ original exercises and his method of Contrology. At VATA Studios we don’t follow their traditional order, focusing instead on bodyweight work. Contemporary Pilates keeps his principles but adapts the exercises with modern variations, props and weights. At VATA Studios, Classical Pilates is the traditional class, while Sculpt Pilates and Strength take a contemporary approach.
No. VATA Studios has no reformers. Classical Pilates here is mat work, often described as the foundation of the method: your bodyweight, breath and gravity provide the load. If you specifically want a reformer, we’re happy to point you to one. If you want core strength, control and better posture, mat Pilates trains all three. Read more on mat vs reformer Pilates.
Classical Pilates currently runs in Warm (32°C) classes only, and the timetable lists the heat for each one. Infrared panels warm you rather than blowing hot air, so the room feels warm without being stuffy. Bring a towel and water.
